Lakehead’s power play stops Gryphon hockey men

THUNDER BAY – Penalties proved costly to the Guelph Gryphons as they surrendered three power-play goals in a 4-2 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA men’s hockey exhibition play Friday night at the Fort William Gardens.

The result left the teams with a split in their Christmas Challenge games as the Gryphs had won 3-2 in overtime Thursday night.

Friday, Lakehead scored two power-play goals in the third period for the win. The hosts opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period, the only goal of the first 40 minutes of play.

Nick Boyer pulled the Gryphs even 54 seconds into the third before Lakehead shot ahead for good three minutes later as the Thunderwolves hit for a pair of goals three and a half minutes apart, the second one on a power play.

Seth Swenson’s goal midway through the period cut the gap to a single goal, but Lakehead got that one back on a power play with 3:05 to go.

Manny Gialedakis and Michael Stevens each had an assist for the Gryphs.

Sam Schutt, Daniel Del Paggio, Jake Ringuette and Brennen Dubchak scored a goal apiece for Lakehead. Assists went to Matt Alexander, Billy Jenkins, Joseph Leonidas, Dubchak, Scott Gall and Patrick Murphy.

Lakehead outshot the Gryphs 35-27.

Jason Da Silva was tagged with the loss for Guelph while Devin Green picked up the win for Lakehead.

Both teams had seven power plays in the game. Lakehead scored on three of theirs and held the Gryphs scoreless on their power plays.

Next game for the Gryphs will be their return to league play following the Christmas and exam break as they’re to host the Toronto Varsity Blues Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
