Last-minute goals give Gryphon hockey women a sweep

WINDSOR – The Guelph Gryphons scored twice in the final minute of the third period to double the Windsor Lancers 4-2 and finish their sweep of the best-of-three OUA women’s hockey league quarter-final series Friday night at the South Windsor arena.

The teams scored once apiece in both the first and second periods and the game remained tied until Sydney Davison scored for Guelph with 46 seconds to go in the third. Claire Merrick added an empty-netter with 10 seconds to go to complete the scoring.

Mackenzie Wong scored in the first period for the Gryphs while Kaitlin Lowy netted a power-play marker in the second. Assists were awarded to Emma Forcey, Ashlee Lawrence, Mallory Young, Brittany St. James and Stephanie Gava.

Erinn Noseworthy scored less than two minutes into the game for Windsor while Krystin Lawrence added the other goal for the hosts 25 seconds after Lowy’s goal.

In the other quarter-finals, Western edged Waterloo 2-1 in overtime Friday to tie their series 1-1. The deciding game is set for Sunday afternoon at Waterloo. Nipissing leads Laurentian 1-0 with Game 2 Saturday night at Sudbury and Toronto leads Queen’s 1-0 with Game 2 Saturday night at Kingston.

In the semifinals, the Gryphs will play the quarter-final survivors who finished lowest in the standings.
