Late comeback attempt by Elora Rocks falls short in playoff opener

SHELBURNE — Three goals in the first period sparked the Shelburne Muskies to a 5-4 victory over the Elora Rocks in the opening game of their WOAA senior men’s hockey league A quarter-final playoff series Friday at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.

Shelburne led 3-0 at the end of the first period before the teams added a goal apiece in the second. Luke Richardson’s power-play goal for Shelburne two and a half minutes into the third period proved to be the winner as the Rocks started a comeback 18 seconds later that fell a goal short.

Brady Prosic, Chad Herron, Spencer Gourlay and Andrew Whalen scored the goals for Elora. Gourlay assisted on two of the goals while single assists were awarded to Danny Belletti, Herron and Prosic.

Santino Diflorio, Jake Nicholson, Eddie Gaffney, Mitch Pike and Richardson had a goal apiece for Shelburne. Nathan King assisted on three of the goals while Nick Glassford and Richardson each had two assists while Tyler McCallum, Nick Hodgson and Nicholson had one each.

Shelburne outshot the Rocks 45-35. Gary Walser was tagged with the loss in the Elora net while Eddie Davie picked up the win for Shelburne.

Second game of the best-of-three series is slated for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.

If the Rocks win that game, the third and final game of the series is schedduled for Monday at 8:30 p.m. at Shelburne.

If Shelburne wins the series, the Muskies will play the Milverton 4 Wheel Drives in the best-of-seven A semifinals. If the Rocks take the series, they’ll play the Huron East Centenaires in the A semifinals.
