Laurentian’s early run does in Gryphon hoops men

SUDBURY – A 13-2 run in the first half helped the Laurentian Voyageurs topple the Guelph Gryphons 84-71 in OUA men’s basketball play Friday night at Laurentian’s Ben Avery Gymnasium.

Andrew Grant’s layup basket following a steal put the Gryphs up by two with 4:12 to go in the first quarter. Kadre Gray pulled Laurentian even when he hit two free throws nine seconds later to start the run that culminated with a Gray basket on a layup to give the Voyageurs a 23-14 lead a minute into the second quarter.

Laurentian scored 20 points in each of the first three quarters to lead 20-14 at the end of the first quarter, 40-30 at halftime and 60-47 after the third quarter.

The Voyageurs might have won the game at the free-throw line as they collected 21 points on free throws while the Gryphs had six. Laurentian took 30 free throws, 21 more than Guelph.

Laurentian also outrebounded the Gryphs as the hosts hauled down 48 rebounds while the Gryphs had 31. Those rebounds helped Laurentian net 18 second-chance points while the Gryphs had 10. The Voyageurs also had 16 points off turnovers, 10 more than Guelph.

Taylor Boers led the Gryphs with 13 points while Grant had 12, Shawn Carey nine and Daniel Dooley seven. Banky Alade and Carey each had five rebounds while Grant had three steals.

Gray finished with 39 points for Laurentian while Nelson Yengue had 22 and David Aromolaran netted 12. Yengue grabbed 12 rebounds and Josis Mikia-Thomas had eight and Gray had seven. Gray also had seven assists.

The result leaves the Gryphs at 2-6 and in a three-way tie for fifth in the West Division while Laurentian is at 5-1 and in a four-way tie for second in the East Division.

The Gryphs are to play the Nipissing Lakers (3-3) at North Bay Saturday at 8 p.m. before wrapping up their games against East Division foes and the 2017 portion of their schedule Friday with an 8 p.m. game against the Queen’s Gaels (5-2) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
