Lions basketball boys dropped in consolation semifinals

SAULT STE. MARIE – The St. James Lions’ stay in the OFSAA provincial high school AA boys’ basketball tournament came to an end Wednesday when they were defeated by the Lasalle Lancers of Sudbury in the consolation semifinal.

Lasalle rallied in the second half for a 57-48 win.

The teams were tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter before the locals grabbed a 30-26 lead by halftime. Lasalle came out of the break and regained the lead in the third quarter, going up 41-36 by the end of the quarter.

Alex Durigon had 16 points for the Lions.

The other consolation semifinal saw the Saint-Famille Cougars of Mississauga edge the Crescent Coyotes of Toronto 60-47.

Saint-Famille won the consolation final 53-45 over Lasalle. Saint-Famille had entered the tournament of 20 as the 19th-seed.

Top-seed Ashbury College Colts of Ottawa won the gold-medal game 76-62 over second-seed Thornlea Thunder of Thornhill while third-seed Kennedy Clippers of Windsor took the bronze-medal match 54-44 over fourth-seed Frontenac Falcons of Kingston.

In the championship round semifinals, Ashbury dropped Frontenac 57-24 and Thornlea edged Kennedy 51-50.
