Lions nip Celtics to reach D10 soccer final

GUELPH – The St. James Lions grabbed the second berth in the District 10 high school girls’ soccer championship Friday by edging the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 2-1 at Bishop Mac.

The Lions and Celtics had finished the regular season with identical 5-2-0 records, but Bishop Mac was awarded second and St. James third based on a 2-0 win by the Celtics over the Lions in each team’s D10 season opener.

Scoring details in the semifinal were not reported.

The Lions are to play the Ross Royals in Monday’s championship game at Ross. The Royals are the defending champs while the Lions will be looking for their first D10 title since 2010.

Ross finished the regular season atop the league at 6-0-1. That record included a 4-2 win over St. James at Ross May 15.

Both teams are already assured of competing at CWOSSA tournaments. Ross will be in the AAA tournament at Kitchener Wednesday and Thursday and St. James will be in the AA tournament at Brantford the same two days.
