Locals named to Canadian track & field team

GUELPH – Several athletes and coaches with ties to the Royal City have been named to the Canadian team for next month’s world track and field championships in London, England.

Athletes named to the team are Guelph’s Geneviève Lalonde, a member of the Speed River Track and Field Club, in the women’s 3,000-metre steeplechase, Guelph native Andrea Seccafien in the women’s 5,000 metres, former University of Guelph female athlete of the year Rachel Cliff in the women’s 10,000 metres, part-time Guelph resident Rachel Hannah in the women’s marathon and Speed River’s Eric Gillis in the men’s marathon.

Also named to the team are coach Dave Scott-Thomas and physiotherapist Brenda Scott-Thomas of Guelph and the Speed River team and physiologist Dr. Trent Stellingwerff, a U of G graduate and Speed River member.

A total of 48 athletes were named to the Canadian team for the world championship meet that is to run Aug. 4 to 13.

The Canadians will be looking to improve on their total of eight medals (two gold, three silver, three bronze) at the 2015 world championships that were held in Beijing, China.
