Matthews and Zheng capture provincial peewee golf titles

CAMBRIDGE — First-round leaders Justin Matthews of the Lindsay Golf & Country Club and Victoria Zheng of Station Creek Golf Club converted those leads into provincial titles Tuesday at the Golf Association of Ontario’s peewee championship tournaments at the Puslinch Lake Golf Course.

Matthews won the boys’ tournament by firing an even-par 70 Tuesday to finish the two-day tournament at 1-under 139. He had the low score in each round.

Thomas Latter of Credit Valley Golf & Country Club and Alex Long of The Country Club tied for second at 4-over 144 and Beni Long of The Country Club and Peter Blazevic of Greystone Golf Club tied for fourth at 148.

Rounding out the top 10 were public player Ben MacLean at 149, Rylan Marontate of Kingsville Golf & Country Club and Owen Kim of Hidden Lake Golf Club at 150, Ethan Irvine of Beverly Golf & Country Club at 152 and public player James Newton at 153.

Tyler May of Fergus and Wildwinds Golf Links finished 27th at 174.

Zheng won the peewee girls’ tournament with a two-round total of 6-over 146. She had the low score in the first round and tied with third-place finisher Madelin Boyd of Lakeridge Links Golf Club for low score of 2-over 74 in the second round.

Brooke Rivers of the Brampton Golf Club finished second overall at 149 while Boyd had a two-round total of 152. Kelly Zhao of Station Creek Golf Club was fourth at 159 and was followed by Jillian A. Friyia of Greenhills Golf Club at 162, Alexandra Trojak of Hidden Lake Golf Club at 166, Nyah Kelly of Lindsay Golf & Country Club at 168, public player Madeleine Pytura at 173 and Lauren Gervais of Quinelle Golf Club and Sarah Gallagher of Royal Ontario Golf Course each at 177.
