Matthews, Zheng lead halfway through peewee golf tourney

CAMBRIDGE — Justin Matthews of the Lindsay Golf & Country Club didn’t let the damp conditions early in the round bother him as he claimed the lead at the halfway point of the two-day Golf Association of Ontario peewee boys’ championship tournament Monday at the Puslinch Lake Golf Course.

Matthews finished the round at 1-under 69 to hold a one-stroke lead over Alex Long of The Country Club. Peter Blazevic of Greystone Golf Club is third at 71, Kevin Lee of Station Creek Golf Club fourth at 72 and Thomas Latter of the Credit Valley Golf & Country Club fifth at 73. Owen Kim of Hidden Lake Golf Club, public player James Newton, Rylan Marontate of Kingsville Golf & Country Club and Beni Long of The Country Club tied for sixth at 74.

Victoria Zheng of Markham leads the girls’ tournament at 72 while Brooke Rivers shot a 74, Madelin Boyd and Kelly Zhao 78s and Alexandra Trojak 81.

The tournaments wrap up Tuesday.
