Milton’s Mattell grabs International Open Welcome win

ROCKWOOD – Jennifer Mattell of Milton rode Cherokee to the win in The International’s $35,000 Open Welcome Thursday night in Angelstone Tournaments’ main stadium.

The win was the first for Mattell in any class at Angelstone this year.

Mattell and Cherokee had a fault-free run through the jump-off course in a winning time of 38.984 seconds to prevail in the event that attracted a field of 38.

A total of 10 horse/rider combinations had clear trips in the opening round.

Daniel Coyle of Ireland guided Cita to a second-place finish with a time of 39.326 seconds in the jump-off while David Arcand of Boisbriand, Que., to Hawai Van Paemel to third in 40.385 seconds.

Of the 10 who made it to the jump-off, seven had fault-free trips in the extra round. The others were Hera Van De Kouterhoeve and Erynn Ballard of Hillsburgh in 40.584 seconds, CHS Inception and Andrew Bourns of Ireland in 40.726 seconds, Chacco Prime and Alexanne Thibault of Brossard, Que., in 41.345 seconds and Quirie 2 and Ali Wolff of New Albany, Ohio, in 42.501 seconds.

The International is the third event of Angelstone’s Summer Tour and its final tournament of the season. Main event is Saturday’s $40,000 International Grand Prix. It’s scheduled to start at 8 p.m. in the main stadium.
