Mohawks double Hamilton, Game 5 Sunday

HAMILTON – The Elora Mohawks forced their Ontario junior B lacrosse playoff series to its five-game limit Thursday night when they doubled the Hamilton Bengals 8-4 at the Dave Andreychuk Arena.

The result ties the best-of-five Western Conference quarter-final at two wins apiece. The deciding game is to be played Sunday at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in Fergus. Game time is 7 p.m., a change from the original listed time of 8 p.m.

Thursday the Mohawks won it with a spree of six consecutive goals that started late in the second period with Elora trailing 3-2.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Elora led 4-3 at the end of the second.

Both teams cut down on their penalties in the game as there were a total of 10 minutes in penalties issued during the game, six to Hamilton.

The Mohawks outshot Hamilton 42-35 and both teams scored a power-play goal, Elora on three chances and Hamilton on two. The Bengals also had a shorthanded goal.

Kurtis Woodland had a hat trick for the Mohawks while single goals were netted by Ryan Buller, Eric Egan, Klayton Hoelscher, Cody Stannard and Dean Sealey. Stannard had three assists while Buller and Hyatt Welsh had two apiece and Ryan Mueller and Sealey had one each.

Jordan Gillis scored twice for Hamilton while Sam English and Luke Robinson added the other goals. Assists were awarded to Trevor Barrett, Tanner Brenneke, Jimmy Chadwick, Gillis, Greg Morrisette and Robinson.

Matt Humphrey picked up the win in net for Elora as he made 31 saves. Jackson Brown took the loss for Hamilton. He made 30 saves, but was replaced by Dylan Sprentz after allowing Elora’s seventh goal at 9:31 of the third period.

In the other Western Conference series, the Orangeville Northmen defeated the Owen Sound North Stars 7-4 Thursday night at Owen Sound to win their series 3-1, Six Nations Rebels lead the Point Edward Pacers 2-0 with Game 3 set for Friday night at Hagersville and the Windsor Clippers lead the Wallaceburg Red Devils 2-1 with Game 4 Saturday afternoon at Wallaceburg.
