Mohawks secure win over Niagara to remain unbeaten

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks scored twice in the final seven minutes to secure an 11-8 victory over the Niagara Thunderhawks in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Saturday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The win in their home opener kept the Mohawks undefeated and lifted their record to 4-0-0. The game was Niagara’s season opener.

The Mohawks led 5-2 at the end of the first period before Niagara closed the gap to 7-6 by the end of the second with two goals in the final minute and a half of the period. The margin was at a single goal (9-8) with three minutes to go in the third before Kurtis Woodland and Josh Rex added goals to clinch the win for Elora.

Woodland finished with three goals and two assists for the Mohawks while Hyatt Welsh and Mitch Taylor scored twice apiece. Single goals wee netted by Dean Sealey, Rex, Nathan Bolger and Ryan Mueller. Sealey had five assists and Mueller had four, Cole Spear had three, Welsh, Rex and Klayton Hoelscher had two apiece and Taylor had one.

Zach Luis scored four times for Niagara while Saul Vanderzalm had two goals and two assists and Chris Weier and Kellen Pulera tallied once each. Aidan Buis collected two assists and Kent Baker-Printup, Adam Dunbar and Weier each had one.

The Mohawks outshot Niagara 47-29, scored on their only power play and held Niagara scoreless on its two power plays.

Matt Humphrey was credited with the win in the Elora net while Keelan Buis took the loss for Niagara.

The Mohawks are to host the Orangeville Northmen (1-0-0) Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Elora and District Community Centre.
