Mohawks to meet Wallaceburg in conference semifinals

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks will face the Wallaceburg Red Devils in the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League’s Western Conference semifinals.

That was decided Tuesday when the Orangeville Northmen doubled the Windsor Clippers 10-5 to win that best-of-five conference quarter-final 3-2. The Northmen finished the regular season in sixth place in the conference, the lowest quarter-final survivor, so they’ll play the first-place Six Nations Rebels in the other best-of-five conference semifinal.

The Mohawks finished second in the conference while Wallaceburg was fourth.

Elora finished atop the Mid West Division at 17-3-0 while Wallaceburg tied for first in the Far West Division with Windsor at 16-4-0. The Clippers won the tie-breaker to be awarded first in the division.

The Mohawks and Red Devils met once during the regular season with Wallaceburg prevailing 10-8 at the Elora and District Community Centre June 2. The Mohawks haven’t lost since that setback as they won their final six games of the regular season and swept the Niagara Thunderhawks 3-0 in the conference quarter-finals.

Klayton Hoelscher led the Mohawks offensively in that series as he had eight goals and 12 assists while Cole Spear collected 11 goals and six assists, Kurtis Woodland had seven goals and eight assists and Tyrus Rehanek had 15 assists. Landon Kells played all three games in net and responded with a 3.67 goals-against average and .882 save percentage.

Kyle Dawson had 10 goals and seven assists in the five games of Wallaceburg’s conference quarter-final playoff series win.
