Mohawks top Hamilton in OT to remain unbeaten

HAMILTON –The Elora Mohawks needed a pair of power-play goals in overtime by Cole Spear to retain their unbeaten record in the Ontario junior B lacrosse league Sunday at the Dave Andreychuk Arena.

Spear’s overtime goals lifted the Mohawks to an 8-7 victory over the Hamilton Bengals.

The goals also allowed the Mohawks to rebound from a 3-1 deficit after the second period.

Despite that lead, host Hamilton had to come back with two goals in the final three minutes of regulation time to tie the match 6-6 and force a 10-minute overtime period.

A major penalty and game misconduct to Hamilton’s Sam Gower for high sticking – his second high-sticking major of the game — just shy of two and a half minutes into overtime proved costly. Spear scored twice during that penalty as the Mohawks went 5-for-6 on their power play. The Bengals were scoreless on their six power plays.

Spear had also had a penalty shot in the second period, but didn’t score. He finished with a hat trick for the Mohawks while Ryan Mueller and Kurtis Woodland scored twice each and Owen O’Donnell added the other goal. Dean Sealey had three assists while Spear and Woodland had two each and Jack Francis, Hyatt Welsh, Mueller and Josh Rex had one each.

Luke Robinson fired home two goals for Hamilton and Danny Attridge, Tanner Brenneke, Michael Mayes, Jordan Gillis and Ty Argent scored once each. Argent had three assists and Gillis and Brenneke had two each and Yvon Bolduc had one.

Landon Kells had 45 saves for the win in net for the Mohawks and Dylan Sprentz had 50 for Hamilton, including all 25 sent his way in the second period.

The Mohawks have won all nine league games they’ve played this season to stretch their unbeaten streak in regular-season play to 12 games as they also won the final three of their 2017 season.

Other undefeated squads in the league are the Six Nations Rebels (10-0-0), Oakville Buzz (8-0-0) and the Green Gaels of Clarington (6-0-0).

The Mohawks get more than a week away from league play before they are to complete their stretch of seven consecutive road games May 24 with a game against the Owen Sound North Stars (3-6-0) at the Bayshore arena. Game time is 8 p.m.
