More points for Toropchenko in second Storm win

SAGINAW, Mich. – Another three-point game by Alexey Toropchenko sparked the Guelph Storm to its second OHL win in as many nights.

Toropchenko picked up a goal and two assists Saturday night as the Storm doubled the Saginaw Spirit 6-3 at the Dow Event Center.

A fourth-round pick of the St. Louis Blues in this year’s NHL draft, Moscow native Toropchenko has four goals and four assists in four games with the Storm.

Toropchenko is in a three-way tie for second in the league’s scoring race, one point behind former Storm centre Luke Burghardt who has six goals and three assists in four games with the North Bay Battalion. Burghardt was part of the June 27 deal that saw the Storm get Zach Poirier and Mark Shoemaker from North Bay.

Three goals in the second period gave the Storm a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first before the Storm surged ahead 4-2 by the end of the second.

Poirier, Garrett McFadden, Isaac Ratcliffe, Cedric Ralph and Barret Kirwin also scored for the Storm while Matt Hotchkiss, Ryan Merkley and Dmitri Samorukov had two assists apiece. Getting one assist each were Owen Lalonde, McFadden and Tag Bertuzzi.

Cole Coskey, Nicholas Porco and Ben Badalamenti scored once each for Saginaw. Assists were awarded to Hayden Davis, Brock Hill, Marcus Crawford and Damien Giroux.

The Storm outshot Saginaw 38-36 and made the most of its power plays by netting four goals on five power plays. The Spirit was scoreless on five power plays.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in net for the Storm while Evan Cormier took the loss for Saginaw. Cormier was replaced by Brendan Bonello for the third period.

The win lifts the Storm to 2-1-0-1 while Saginaw falls to 1-2-1-0.

The Storm is to host the Windsor Spitfires (3-1-0-0) Friday at the Sleeman Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
