Mount Forest Patriots finish sweep of Wingham
WINGHAM — Four goals in the second period sparked the Mount Forest Patriots to a series-ending 5-2 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff action Friday night at the Wescast Complex Rink.
The win gave Mount Forest a four-game sweep of their best-of-seven Pollock Division quarter-final.
Wingham scored the only goal of the first period before the Patriots rallied to carry a 4-2 lead into the third.
Brendon Aitken tallied twice for Mount Forest while single goals were added by Michael Stefanelli, Spencer Holt and Ryan Maksymyk. Shawn Lantz assisted on four of the goals while Ryley Cribbin had two assists and Holt had one.
Bailey Boyes and Shane Vollmer scored the goals for Wingham.
The Patriots outshot Wingham 35-30 and went 2-for-10 on the power play while the Ironmen, who were shorthanded for most of the final eight minutes of the game, were scoreless on four power plays.
Mathieu Oullette was the winning goaltender for the Patriots while Alex Metzger was charged with the loss.
The Patriots will wait to see who they play in the divisional semifinals.
If the Mitchell Hawks beat the Goderich Flyers, Mount Forest and Mitchell will meet in the semifinals. Mitchell leads that series 2-1.
The other series between the Kincardine Bulldogs and Hanover Barons is tied 2-2. The Walkerton Hawks received a bye to the semifinals by finishing first in the regular season.
