Mount Forest Patriots ousted by Stayner

STAYNER – Four consecutive goals by Ben Hughes of the Stayner Siskins Thursday night at the Stayner Memorial Arena brought an end to the Provincial Junior Hokey League season for the Mount Forest Patriots.

Hughes helped the Siskins drop the Patriots 5-2 in Game 5 of the North Conference final to claim a 4-1 victory in the best-of-seven series.

The Patriots scored the only goal of the first period and led 2-1 nine minutes into the second before Hughes started his scoring spree. Stayner led 3-2 at the end of the second.

Klayton Hoelscher scored both goals for Mount Forest while assists went to Ryley Cribbin, Derek Williams, Blair Butchart and Thomas Haffner.

Hughes also assisted on the goal he didn’t score, a tally by Kevin Boyd. Lucas Jeffery had two assists while Austin Fischer, Jarrett Baker, Jordan Taylor, Mark Dupont and goaltender Marcus Semiao each had one assist.

The Patriots outshot Stayner 42-27 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while the Siskins were scoreless on six power plays. However, the hosts scored two shorthanded goals.

David Lobsinger took the loss in net for the Patriots. He had 22 saves while Stayner’s winning netminder Semiao had 40 saves.

The loss puts an end to a season that saw the Patriots set a franchise record for wins and points in the regular season. Mount Forest finished atop the Pollock Division with a 31-7-0-2 record for 64 points and the Patriots won playoff series over the Wingham Ironmen and Walkerton Hawks to claim their second consecutive division championship.

Stayner advances to the PJHL semifinals where they join the Glanbrook Rangers who swept the Tavistock Braves 4-0 in the South Conference final. The Lakefield Chiefs lead the Port Hope Panthers 3-2 in the East Conference final and the Lakeshore Canadiens and Lambeth 73’s are tied 2-2 in the West Conference final.
