National 10K road race titles for Gillis, Cliff
OTTAWA – Eric Gillis of Guelph and former University of Guelph female athlete of the year Rachel Cliff captured Canadian 10-kilometre road race championships last weekend.
The pair were top Canadian finishers in the men’s and women’s classes of the Ottawa 10K race that was part of the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.
Gillis, who has competed in three Olympics, was eighth overall in the men’s race, finishing with a time of 30 minutes and nine seconds.
Leul Gebresilase of Ethiopia won in 28:42.1 while Martin Hehir of the U.S. was second in 29:05.0 and Nicholas Bor of Kenya was third in 29:33.0.
Tristan Woodfine of Guelph was 11th in 30:56.2. Woodfine and Gillis are members of the Speed River Track and Field Club.
Cliff, the 2009-10 female athlete of the year at the U of G, was fifth in the women’s race in a time of 33:34.3.
Netsanet Gudeta of Ethiopia won in 31:34.1 and was followed by Kenyans Paskalia Chepkorir in second in 32:07.1 and Monicah Ngige in third in 32:45.8.
Several Guelphites finished the race including Terri Rowan, Derek Kelly, Clare Lewis, Warren Kurt, Jenny Santos-Haayen, Cheryl Miller and Brooke Sillaby as did the Erin pair of Shelley Gregory and Sheila Gregory.
