National university men’s rugby tourney starts Thursday
GUELPH – The field and schedule are set for this week’s Canadian university men’s rugby championship tournament that is to be held at Alumni Stadium.
The OUA silver medalist Guelph Gryphons will be in B Pool with the Victoria Vikes from B.C. and UPEI Panthers from Charlottetown. At the end of October Victoria won the Hindson Cup tournament that featured two teams from B.C. and two from Alberta. UPEI claimed the Maritime championship last weekend.
A Pool will feature the B.C. Rugby Union university champion UBC Thunderbirds from Vancouver, OUA bronze medalist McMaster Marauders from Hamilton and Quebec champion Concordia Stingers from Montreal.
McMaster is in as OUA champion Queen’s Gaels declined an invitation.
Play is to start Thursday with the first of three days of round-robin action. A Pool games are set for 12 p.m. each day and B Pool games are to follow at 2 p.m.
The medal games are slated for Sunday. Second-place finishers in pool play are to meet in the bronze-medal match at 11:30 a.m. while first-place finishers are to tangle in the gold-medal game at 1 p.m.

2 p.m.: Guelph Gryphons vs. UPEI Panthers
12 p.m.: Concordia Stingers vs. McMaster Marauders
2 p.m.: Victoria Vikes vs. UPEI Panthers
12 p.m.: UBC Thunderbirds vs. McMaster Marauders
2 p.m.: Guelph Gryphons vs. Victoria Vikes
11:30 a.m.: Bronze-medal game, second in Pool A vs. second in Pool B
1 p.m.: Gold-medal game, first in Pool A vs. first in Pool B
