OHL teams select local talent in 2017 draft

GUELPH – Several local players were picked in Saturday’s OHL draft, including three who played with the Guelph Junior Gryphons minor midget AAA squad last winter..

Nick Wong of Erin, a centre with the Mississauga Senators minor midget AAAs this winter, was picked in the second round, 38th overall, by the Oshawa Generals. He had 16 goals and 13 assists with Mississauga and also appeared in the last two OHL Cup tournaments, getting a goals and two assists in seven games.

Centre Matthew Gordon, who played for his hometown Guelph Junior Gryphons minor midget AAAs, was picked in the third round, 58th overall. A native of Mermaid, P.E.I., Gordon had 18 goals and 11 assists in 34 games for the Junior Gryphs last winter, his first in the Guelph Minor Hockey Association.

Centre Brayden Krieger of Elora was taken in the sixth round, 107th overall, by the London Knights. He had 15 goals and 18 assists in 33 games with the Waterloo Wolves minor midget AAAs in the regular season last winter. He added six goals and five assists in 15 playoff games.

Right winger Tyson Koopman of Palmerston was selected in the sixth round, 119th overall, by the Owen Sound Attack. He had four goals, four assists and 74 penalty minutes in 20 games with the Huron Perth Lakers minor midget AAAs last winter.

Goaltender Matt Dunsmoor of Guelph was picked in the 15th round, 155th overall, by the Mississauga Steelheads. He had a 1.80 goals-against average and three shutouts in 20 games with the Guelph Junior Gryphons minor midget AAAs in the 2016-17 season.

Right winger Kurtis Goodwin of Fergus was selected in the 13th round, 253rd overall, by the Mississauga Steelheads. He had 14 goals and 13 assists in 33 games with the Waterloo Wolves minor midget AAA squad.

Defenceman Jonah Burley of Rockwood was the Guelph Storm’s 14th-round pick, 262nd overall. He had five goals and six assists in 34 games with the Guelph Junior Gryphons minor midget AAAs last winter.

Zach Russell of Guelph was taken in the 15th round, 294th overall, by the Oshawa Generals. The right winger, who’s a left shot, had 16 goals and 19 assists in 32 games with the Kitchener Junior Rangers minor midget AAAs last season.
