Once again Storm survives to play again

GUELPH – The Guelph Storm avoided elimination for the third consecutive game Saturday as they forced their Ontario Hockey League Western Conference semifinal with the London Knights to a seventh and final game.

The Storm scored three straight goals including two in two minutes and 22 seconds late in the second period on their way to a 5-3 victory over London at the Sleeman Centre.

The result ties the best-of-seven series at three wins apiece. London won the first three games of the conference semifinal.

Saturday, London scored the only goal of the first period and led 2-1 with three minutes to go in the second. However, the Storm’s quick pair lifted them into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The hosts were up 3-2 at the end of the second.

Isaac Ratcliffe, Jack Hanley, Sean Durzi, Domenico Commisso and Nick Suzuki had a goal apiece for the Storm while MacKenzie Entwistle, Suzuki and Owen Lalonde each picked up two assists. Single assists were awarded to Alexey Toropchenko, Hanley and Nate Schnarr.

Liam Foudy, Billy Moskal and Adam Boqvist had the goals for London while single assists went to Alec Regula, goaltender Jordan Kooy, Joey Keane, Josh Nelson, Evan Bouchard and Kevin Hancock.

The Storm outshot London 30-29, but were scoreless on four power plays while the Knights scored on their only power play.

Anthony Popovich was the winning netminder and he had 26 saves in the Guelph net, one more than Kooy had for London.

Tuesday’s game at London’s Budweiser Gardens is to start at 7 p.m.

Winner of Tuesday’s game is to battle either the Saginaw Spirit or Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Western Conference final. The Spirit leads its semifinal with the Greyhounds 3-2 with Game 6 Sunday night at Sault Ste. Marie. If a seventh game is needed, it’s to be played Tuesday night at Saginaw.
