Orangeville wins pair at CWOSSA AAA boys’ hockey tourney

FERGUS – The District 10 champion Orangeville Bears advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals following a pair of wins Monday on the opening day of the CWOSSA high school AAA boys’ hockey championship tournament at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Bears advanced with a pair of 4-3 win as they defeated the Huron Heights Huskies of Kitchener in regulation time and the Resurrection Phoenix of Kitchener in overtime.

Dakota Zarudny had a pair of goals against Huron Heights while Zack Deaken and Jake Quinlan also scored. Kyle Waters and Ty Hooper each had two assists while Dallas Montgomery, Dustyn Pratt, Brendan Chapman and Kyle Whitton had one apiece.

Waters scored the overtime winner against Resurrection when he batted the puck home to complete a hat trick. Deaken scored the other goal while Jackson Arthurs and Zarudny each had one assist.

Orangeville finished first in its pool at 2-0 while Huron Heights was second at 1-1 after beating Resurrection 9-3.

In the other pool, the Grand River Renegades of Kitchener finished first at 2-0 while St. John’s Green Eagles of Brantford were second at 1-1 and Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders of Waterloo were third at 0-2. Grand River beat SJAM 7-1 and St. John’s 6-1 while St. John’s topped SJAM 5-0.

Orangeville is to play St. John’s in one of Tuesday morning’s semifinals while Huron Heights is to battle Grand River in the other.

Winners will meet in the championship game Tuesday at 2 p.m.
