Ottawa, McMaster capture University Challenge Cup titles

GUELPH — The Ottawa Gee-Gees captured the University Challenge Cup of ringette’s Tier One championship Saturday with a 5-4 victory over the Western Mustangs at the Gryphon Centre.

The loss was Western’s only loss of the tournament.

The Lethbridge Pronghorns won the bronze-medal game 9-3 over the Calgary Dinos.

Ottawa and Western each finished round-robin pool play with 13 points as the Gee-Gees had a 6-1-1 record and the Mustangs finished at 5-0-3. Calgary and Lethbridge finished with identical 5-2-1 records and they were followed by the Alberta Pandas at 4-3-1, Carleton Ravens at 3-4-1, Dalhousie Tigers and Brock Badgers each at 2-6-0 and Guelph Gryphons at 0-8-0.

Pool play wrapped up Saturday morning with a trio of games as Carleton dropped Brock 7-2, Western dumped Alberta 7-1 and Lethbridge slipped by Dalhousie 5-3.

The McMaster Marauders won the Tier Two championship with a 4-3 victory in a shootout over the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The loss was Laurier’s only loss of the tournament as the Golden Hawks had marched undefeated through double round-robin pool play.

The Nipissing Lakers won the bronze-medal game 9-4 over the Trent Excalibur.

Laurier had finished pool play first in the tier at 6-0-0 while McMaster was second at 3-2-1, Nipissing third at 2-3-1 and Trent fourth at 0-6-0.

Laurier doubled Trent 6-3 Saturday morning in the tier’s final game of pool play.
