OUA teams winless in Gryphon men’s volleyball tourney

GUELPH – They came and they conquered.

Non-OUA teams won all nine matches at the three-day Guelph Gryphons Invitational men’s volleyball tournament at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre on the Thanksgiving weekend.

Sunday, the host Gryphons dropped their third match of the tournament as they were defeated 3-1 by the Laval Rouge et Or of Quebec City. Laval won 25-17, 25-20, 15-25, 25-20.

Earlier, the Gryphs had been beaten by the defending U Sports champion Trinity Western Spartans of Langley, B.C., Friday and the Alberta Golden Bears of Edmonton Saturday.

The Golden Bears, national runners-up last season, swept the Queen’s Gaels 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-19) Sunday while Trinity Western defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-11, 25-23).

Next action for the Gryphs is a preseason match at home against the Toronto Varsity Blues Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.

The Gryphs are to open their regular season with a home match against the Western Mustangs Oct. 27. Guelph is to play three of its first four matches of the season at home.
