Patriots complete regular season with 31st win

WALKERTON – The Mount Forest Patriots completed their best-ever regular season with a 3-2 victory over the Walkerton Hawks in a fairly meaningless Provincial Junior Hockey League match Sunday at the Walkerton Community Centre.

Both the Patriots and Walkerton had clinched their final finishing positions before the game, Mount Forest finishing first and Walkerton second.

The Patriots led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 3-1 after the second.

Hayden Coulter, Klayton Hoelscher and Dawson Bolger had a goal apiece for Mount Forest while Jack Francis had two assists and Shawn Lantz, Blair Butchart and Coulter had one each.

Brendan Welsh had a goal and an assist for Walkerton while Matt Geifert also scored and Ryan Shaw also had an assist.

Aidan Quish had 21 saves for the Patriots while Cody van der Heide had 18 saves in a losing cause for Walkerton.

Both teams were scoreless on six power plays.

Mount Forest finished first in the Pollock Division at 31-7-0-2 and will get a bye in the division quarter-finals. Walkerton placed second at 25-12-2-1.

Butchart finished as the leading scorer in the division with 23 goals and a division-high 56 assists for 79 points. Kalyton Hoelscher was second with a division-high 42 goals and 25 assists for 67 points.
