Patriots finish season with loss in overtime

ALLISTON – The Provincial Junior Hockey League season for the Mount Forest Patriots came to an end Friday night at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre when they were nipped 3-2 in overtime by the Alliston Hornets.

Joey Visconti scored the winner for the Carruthers Division champions at 13:28 of overtime. That goal also gave Alliston a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven North Conference final. Alliston also received a bench minor following the goal.

It marked the third consecutive conference championship series setback by the Patriots as they had also lost to Alliston in 2017 and to the Stayner Siskins in 2018. Those previous two series losses for the Pollock Division champs were by 4-1 scores.

Friday, Mount Forest never trailed until the overtime winner. The Patriots scored first in an opening period that finished with the teams tied 1-1. Mount Forest scored the lone goal of the second midway through the period and Alliston pulled even six minutes into the third.

Thomas Haffner and Ryley Cribbin scored for the Patriots while Cribbin, goaltender Aidan Quish and Jacob Miller each had an assist.

Visconti and Ben Beausaert had the regulation-time goals for Alliston while Ryan Sallows, Mitch Livingston and Ryan McReynolds each had an assist.

The Patriots outshot the Hornets 46-35 including a 28-17 advantage in shots by the end of the second period. Neither team scored on their power play and penalties were scarce. Mount Forest had two power plays and Alliston had one.

Tyler Ryan had 44 saves to get the win in the Alliston net while Quish had 32 saves for the Patriots.

The Hornets join the Napanee Raiders as conference champions. Napanee completed a four-game sweep of the Uxbridge Bruins in the East Conference final Wednesday.

The Lakeshore Canadiens lead the Exeter Hawks 3-2 in the West Conference final and the Grimsby Peach Kings lead the Wellesley Applejacks 3-2 in the South Conference final.

Game 6 in both of those series is set for Saturday with Game 7 going Sunday if it’s required.

Alliston is to play Napanee in a PJHL Schmalz Cup semifinal while the other two conference champions will meet in the other semifinal.
