Patriots overpowered by Walkerton Hawks

WALKERTON — Penalties proved costly for the Mount Forest Patriots as they surrendered three power-play goals in a 7-4 loss to the Walkerton Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play at the Walkerton Community Centre Friday night.

Walkerton had five power plays and also kept the Patriots scoreless on four power plays.

The Hawks led 2-0 at the end of the first period thanks to two power-play goals and they extended the lead with a pair of goals 54 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the second period. The Patriots closed the gap to 5-4 by the end of the second before Walkerton added a power-play goal and an empty-netter in the third.

Troy Weber had a hat trick for Mount Forest while Luke Hoelscher added the other goal. Ryley Cribbin and Dylan Brown collected two assists apiece while Evan Kuhl, Blake Lewis and Klayton Hoelscher each had one.

Spencer Elder scored twice for Walkerton while single goals were netted by Brendan Welsh, Ryan Shaw, Braden Boley, Quinton Maddock and Justin Donnelly. Boley, Chris RolfVonDenBauman and Josh Deyell each had two assists and Maddock, Maverick Petrie, Donnelly, former Guelph Hurricane Adel Zivojevic and Joe Shaw had one apiece.

Walkerton outshot Mount Forest 33-26.

David Lobsinger was tagged with the loss in net for the Patriots while Matthew Donnelly picked up the win for Walkerton.

The loss was the second in a row for Mount Forest and followed the Patriots’ seven-game win streak. It’s the first time Patriots have dropped two consecutive games.

The result leaves Mount Forest and Walkerton tied for first in the Pollock Division. Mount Forest is at 14-4-0-0 and Walkerton’s at 13-3-1-1.

The Patriots are to host the Hanover Barons (3-12-0-2) in two consecutive home games. They’re to play at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex Saturday at 8 p.m. and Nov. 18 at 8 p.m.
