Patriots rally in third to down Goderich

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots struck for three unanswered goals in the third period to edge the Goderich Flyers 7-5 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots led 2-1 at the end of the first period before Goderich surged ahead 5-4 by the end of the second.

Mount Forest tied it midway through the third then went ahead for good with 3:28 to play. The Patriots wrapped up the scoring with an empty-netter with 22 seconds to go.

Hayden Coulter and Klayton Hoelscher tallied twice apiece for the Patriots while Blair Butchart, Dawson Bolger and Brendon Aitken added single goals. Michael Stefanelli set up three of the goals while Dylan Brown, Butchart and Ryley Cribbin each had two assists and Troy Weber, Jack Francis, Derek Williams and Shawn Lantz had one each.

Noah Nurse, Cody Treble, Trent Michie, Chase Meurs and Matt Bean scored a goal apiece for Goderich. Assists were awarded to Riley Connors, Ben Derrough, Mac Smith, Braeden Duncan, Bean, Treble and Michie.

Mount Forest outshot Goderich 44-39 and both teams had one power-play goal, the Patriots getting six power plays and Goderich getting four.

David Lobsinger picked up the win in net for Mount Forest. He stopped all 14 shots he faced after replacing starter Aidan Quish who made 20 saves, but yielded four goals in a span of four minutes and 10 seconds midway through the game. Kevin Linker took the loss for Goderich.

The win lifted the Patriots’ record to 28-7-0-1. They lead the Pollock Division while Goderich is sixth at 6-27-0-4.

The Patriots, who have four games left on their regular-season schedule, are to play the Mitchell Hawks (21-14-1-1) at Mitchell Sunday at 7:05 p.m.
