Patriots rally to double Goderich to finish preseason

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored four unanswered goals in the second period on their way to a 6-3 victory over the Goderich Flyers in Provincial Junior Hockey League preseason play Saturday night at the Mount Forest Sports Complex.

Goderich led 2-1 at the end of the first period before the Patriots surged ahead 5-2 by the end of the second.

Michael Anselmini had a hat trick for Mount Forest while Luke Hoelscher scored twice and Dawson Bolger added the other goal. Jack Birkett and Thomas Haffner each had two assists while Thomas Coulter, Derek Williams, Bolger, Owen Rahn and Luke Hoelscher had one apiece.

Jeff Fritzley, Chad Treble and Bayden Parent scored for Goderich. Mac Smith assisted on two of the goals while Eric vander Eck, Hayden Benniwies and Braedan Duncan each had one assist.

The Patriots outshot the Flyers 38-26 and both were held scoreless on their power plays, Mount Forest having four power plays and Goderich five.

David Lobsinger picked up the win in net for the Patriots as he made 11 saves in the first 29:16. Aiden Quish made 12 saves in the final 30:44.

Goderich changes goaltenders at the same time as Mount Forest. Branden Bean started and was tagged with the loss despite making 21 saves while Kyle Dunlap made 11 saves.

The game wrapped up the preseason for the Patriots who were 3-3-0.

The Patriots are to open the regular season with a pair of games next weekend. They’re to play the Walkerton Hawks at Walkerton Friday at 8:20 p.m. and host the Hanover Barons Saturday at 8 p.m.
