Patriots repeat as Pollock Division champions
WALKERTON – The Mount Forest Patriots captured their second consecutive Provincial Junior Hockey League Pollock Division championship Friday night with a 4-1 victory over the Walkerton Hawks at the Walkerton Community Centre.
The win gave the Patriots a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven series. It was the only game of the series not to need overtime.
After yielding a goal to Walkerton in the first period, the Patriots rallied with three goals in a span of four minutes and 12 seconds midway through the second to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. They added their final goal with seven minutes to go in the third.
Shawn Lantz, Brady Becker, Klayton Hoelscher and Michael Stefanelli had a goal each for the Patriots while Brendon Aitken, Stefanelli, Blair Butchart and Klayton Hoelscher each picked up an assist.
Justin Donnelly had an unassisted goal for Walkerton.
The Patriots outshot Walkerton 31-21 including a 19-8 advantage in the second period.
Mount Forest went 1-for-5 on its power play and held Walkerton scoreless on five power plays.
Aidan Quish picked up the win for the Patriots as he stopped all 15 shots he faced in the second and third period. David Lobsinger had played the first and made five saves.
Mathew Donnelly was charged with the loss for the Hawks. He had 27 saves.
The Patriots advance to play the Stayner Siskins in the North Conference final.
Stayner won the Carruthers Division final 4-1 over the Alliston Hornets. The Siskins had finished atop their division with a 40-2-0-0 record while the Patriots had a 31-7-0-2 mark in the regular season.
Mount Forest swept the three games it played in the regular season against Carruthers Division opponents, but did not play Stayner. The Siskins won the two games they played against Pollock Division opponents.
The Patriots were defeated 4-1 by Alliston in last season’s conference final.
