Patriots score six in a row in win over Hanover

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored the first six goals of the game on their way to a 10-1 victory over the Hanover Barons in their final home game of the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s regular season Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots led 4-0 at the end of the first period and 9-1 after the second.

Brendon Aitken fired home two goals for the Patriots while Dawson Bolger, Ryan Maksymyk, Jack Francis, Michael Stefanelli, Klayton Hoelscher, Ryley Cribbin, Blair Butchart and Derek Williams scored once apiece. Thomas Haffner had three assists while Shawn Lantz, Dawson Bolger, Butchart, Hayden Coulter and Brady Becker had two each and Blake Lewis, Klayton Hoelscher and Derick Acheson had one apiece.

Brett Zabel scored the goal for Hanover midway through the game while Alex Paylor and Jorden Reaman assisted on the goal.

The Patriots had three power-play goals on a total of five power plays, a shorthanded tally and they outshot Hanover 38-32. The Barons were scoreless on four power plays.

David Lobsinger had the win in net for Mount Forest while starter Jack Armstrong took the loss in net for Hanover. He was replaced by Luke Aulthouse at 7:46 of the first period after allowing three goals on 11 shots.

The Patriots have already clinched a first-place finish in the Pollock Division. The win lifted their record to 30-7-0-2 while Hanover completed its regular season with the loss. The Barons will finish seventh in the seven-team division at 6-31-0-3.

Entering the final day of the regular season, the Walkerton Hawks (25-11-2-1) are second, Kincardine Bulldogs (23-12-2-3) third, Mitchell Hawks (23-14-1-1) fourth, Wingham Ironmen (21-14-1-3) fifth and Goderich Flyers (7-29-0-4) sixth.

The Patriots are to play Walkerton Sunday at 4:50 p.m. at the Walkerton Community Centre.

Mount Forest will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs, then play the lowest-ranked quarter-final survivor in the semifinals.
