Patriots slip by Mitchell to narrow gap in Pollock semifinal

MITCHELL – A goal early in the third period lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 2-1 victory over the Mitchell Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff action Saturday night at the Mitchell arena.

The result cuts Mitchell’s lead in the best-of-seven Pollock Division semifinal to 3-2.

Jack Vautour’s goal at 2:01 of the third proved to be the winner.

The teams had scored a goal apiece just over two minutes apart in the first period. Jake Finlayson scored for Mitchell at 10:39 and Spencer Holt responded for Mount Forest at 12:47.

Troy Weber, Ostop Mostowy and Troy Oakley had assists for the Patriots while Derek Elliott had an assist for Mitchell.

The Hawks outshot Mount Forest 38-26 and both teams were scoreless on their power plays, the Patriots with three opportunities and Mitchell with seven.

Mathieu Oullette was the winning netminder for Mount Forest while Graeme Lauersen took the loss for Mitchell.

Game 6 is slated for Wednesday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8 p.m.
