Patriots slip by Wingham to grab 2-0 lead in playoff series

WINGHAM — A pair of second-period goals carried the Mount Forest Patriots to a 2-1 win over the Wingham Ironmen in the second game of their Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff series Sunday at the Wescast Complex rink.

The result gives Mount Forest a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Pollock Division quarter-final series.

All the scoring in the game was limited to the second period.

Josh Stewart’s goal at 1:21 of the period put Wingham ahead. Tomas Azzano and Brad Randson assisted on the goal.

Mount Forest pulled even two minutes later on a goal by Spencer Holt, with help from Mitch Betts and Blair Butchart.

The Patriots hit for the eventual game-winner just under five minutes later when Ryan Maksymyk scored on a power play. Assists were awarded to Troy Oakley and Jack Vautour.

Wingham outshot the Patriots 31-23 in the game while Mount Forest went 1-for-9 on the power play and Wingham was scoreless on four power plays.

Mathieu Oullette was the winning goalie for Mount Forest while Alex Metzger took the loss for Wingham.

Third game of the series is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
