Patriots surrender three in second, lose to Kincardine

KINCARDINE – Three goals in the second period proved to be the difference in the game as the Mount Forest Patriots fell 5-2 to the Kincardine Bulldogs in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Davidson Centre.

After a scoreless first period, the hosts jumped ahead with three goals in the middle frame, two of the goals coming on power plays.

After the Bulldogs extended their lead to four goals early in the third, the Patriots hit for their two goals 63 seconds apart after the midway point of the period. Kincardine wrapped up the scoring with an empty-netter with 1:15 to go.

Luke Hoelscher and Ryley Cribbin scored the goals for Mount Forest while Klayton Hoelscher assisted on both. Ryan Maksymyk and Shawn Lantz each had one assist.

Mike Fiegehen scored twice for Kincardine while single goals were added by Brett Burrows, Damien Demarco-Sutton and Brady Richards. Getting one assist apiece were Robert White, Payton Dunlop, Burrows, Derrick Bernath, Fiegehen and Jordan Caskenette.

The Patriots outshot the Bulldogs 36-32 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while Kincardine went 2-for-5.

David Lobsinger took the loss in net for the Patriots while Craig Luinstra picked up the win for Kincardine.

Mount Forest leads the Pollock Division at 19-5-0-0 while Kincardine moves into a tie for second with the Walkerton Hawks. The Bulldogs are at 16-8-1-3 while Walkerton has two games in hand on Kincardine at 17-6-1-1.

The Patriots and Bulldogs have split the four meetings they’ve had this season. Mount Forest won 3-2 at Kincardine Sept. 15 and 2-1 at home Oct. 21 while Kincardine’s other win was by a 5-1 count at Kincardine Nov. 5. They have three more meetings this season – next Saturday at Mount Forest at 8 p.m., Dec. 22 at Kincardine and Jan. 13 at Mount Forest.

The Patriots were to have played the Walkerton Hawks at Walkerton Sunday afternoon, but that game has been postponed due to Walkerton’s lack of players because of injuries. A make-up date has not been set.

The Patriots have a three-in-three next weekend starting with a game against the Wingham Ironmen at Wingham (14-9-1-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m. They’re to host Kincardine Saturday night and Walkerton Sunday at 2 p.m.
