Patriots use fast start to win their playoff opener

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored three times in the first period on their way to a 6-4 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The game was the first for the Patriots since they wrapped up their regular season with a 3-2 win over the Walkerton Hawks at Walkerton Jan. 28. The Patriots finished first in the seven-team Pollock Division at 31-7-0-2 and received a bye in the divisional quarter-finals.

The fifth-place Ironmen (22-14-1-3) swept the fourth-place Mitchell Hawks (23-15-1-1) in the divisional quarter-finals to advance to the divisional semifinals against the defending division champions.

Saturday, the Patriots led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 4-2 after the second.

Ryley Cribbin, Blair Butchart, Ryan Maksymyk, Brady Becker, Brendon Aitken and Luke Hoelscher scored a goal apiece for the Patriots. Shawn Lantz assisted on three of the goals while Maksymyk, Luke Hoelscher and Dylan Brown each had two assists and Klayton Hoelscher, Butchart and Michael Stefanelli had one apiece.

Jamie Huber connected for a pair of goals for Wingham and Carter Collinson and Tanner Hertel added single goals. Shane Vollmer assisted on two of the goals and single assists were awarded to Kyle Stanbury, Collinson, Rhys Vollmer and Huber.

The Patriots outshot Wingham 37-31 and David Lobsinger was the winning goalie. Jamie Brock took the loss as he allowed three goals on 20 shots in just over 39 minutes of play. Wyatt Nicholson yielded three goals on 14 shots in just under 21 minutes of play.

Wingham went 3-for-8 on its power play while the Patriots went 2-for-5.

Second game in the best-of-seven series is set for Sunday at 8 p.m. at Wingham’s Wescast Centre.
