Popovich and Storm turn Attack aside

GUELPH – Anthony Popovich turned aside 42 shots as the Guelph Storm downed the Owen Sound Attack 4-1 in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

The Storm was outshot in each period and 43-27 overall, but never trailed in the game. They led 1-0 at the end of the first period and 3-1 after the second after Givani Smith scored a pair of goals 2:03 apart late in the period.

James McEwan and Dmitri Samorukov had the other goals for the Storm while Liam Hawel had three assists, McEwan had two and Samorukov and Owen Lalonde had one apiece.

Daylon Groulx scored for Owen Sound with help from Nick Suzuki and Aidan Dudas.

Olivier Lafreniere started in net for the Attack and took the loss. He stopped 20 shots until being replaced by Mack Guzda at 2:48 of the third period after Samorukov’s goal completed the scoring in the game. Guzda stopped the three shots he faced.

Owen Sound was 1-for-4 on the power play while the Storm was scoreless on five power plays.

The win allows the Storm to stretch the gap to the Attack in the Midwest Division standings to eight points. The Storm is third at 19-15-1-3 while Owen Sound is fourth at 14-16-1-5.

The Storm is to host the OHL-leading Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (33-3-2-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.

It’ll be the Storm’s third meeting with the Greyhounds in eight games (22 days) and fourth and final time this regular season. Sault Ste. Marie won 4-3 in a shootout at Sault Ste. Marie Dec. 30, 7-1 at the Sleeman Centre Dec. 16 and 7-4 at Sault Ste. Marie Oct. 22.
