Popovich backs Storm to win over Hamilton
GUELPH – Goaltender Anthony Popovich stopped 45 shots as the Guelph Storm hung on to edge the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.
The Bulldogs outshot the Storm 39-9 in the first and third period combined and 46-25 overall.
The win put an end to a three-game losing streak for the Storm who grabbed a lead in the first period on defenceman Mark Woolley’s first OHL goal. Cam Hillis and Owen Lalonde assisted on the play. The locals had one other shot on goal in the period.
Cedric Ralph added his third of the season in the third minute of the second period to extend Guelph’s lead. Assists were awarded to Dmitri Samorukov and Alexey Toropchenko.
Hamilton cut the gap to a single goal at 3:49 of the third on an unassisted goal by Arthur Kaliyev.
The Bulldogs pressed after that, but couldn’t net the equalizer.
The Storm was held scoreless on two power plays while Hamilton didn’t score on its only power play.
Guelph improves to 4-5-0-1 with the win while Hamilton falls to 5-2-1-2.
The Storm heads out on the road for two more games this weekend. They’re to play the Saginaw Spirit at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at Sault Ste. Marie’s Essar Centre Sunday at 2:07 p.m.
