Provincial Elite Gryphons rebound by blanking North Toronto

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons bounced back from their loss last week to clout the North Toronto Nitros 5-0 in Ontario Women’s Soccer League Provincial Elite play Monday at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Abbi Morrell scored two of the goals for the Gryphons while Jacquelina Preza Paule, Cassie Wheldon and Victoria Hinchliffe also scored.

Hinchliffe’s goal was her league-leading 14th of the season. She has twice as many goals as her closest rival, Cassandra Van Bakel of Vaughan Azzurri.

The Gryphs lead the league at 6-2-1 for 19 points. However, runner-up GS United has three games in hand and is a point back at 6-0-0.

North Toronto is seventh at 3-4-1.

The Gryphs and North Toronto are to play again Thursday at Toronto’s Downsview Park. Game time is 9 p.m.
