Quick start leads Thistles to win over Halton Hills

GEORGETOWN – The Fergus Thistles struck for eight goals in the first period on their way to an 18-9 doubling of the Halton Hills Bulldogs in Ontario junior C lacrosse league play Wednesday night at the Mold Master Arena.

A four-goal outburst by Halton Hills in the third period closed the gap to six goals, but Fergus responded by scoring four of the game’s final five goals.

The Thistles led 8-3 at the end of the first period and 13-4 after the second.

Trent Spear struck for five goals for the Thistles while Justin Beaulieu added a hat trick. Logan Cameron, McCaiden Dixon and Brett Harrison each had two goals while J.J. Swanston, Louie Ristov, Adam Lantz and Carson Stevenson added single goals. Lantz assisted on six of the goals while Harrison had four, Beaulieu and Swanston had three apiece, Spear had two and Eli McLeod, Jake Bauman and Cameron had one each.

Zac Tarr led Halton Hills with a four-goal outing while Jackson Webster had a hat trick and Merrick Lemme and Spencer McPherson scored once each. Lemme had three assists, Webster and Sean Caruso two apiece and Tarr, Mathew Cull and McPherson one each.

The Thistles went 1-for-6 on their power play while Halton Hills went 1-for-8.

Shots on net were not kept.

Tyson Reeves was the winning goalie for Fergus while Jordan Rowsell took the loss for Halton Hills.

The win evens Fergus’s record at 1-1-0 while the loss drops Halton Hills to 0-3-0.

The Thistles are to play the Six Nations Warriors (1-0-0) at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville Saturday at 2 p.m.
