Ratcliffe helps Storm slip by Saginaw

GUELPH – Isaac Ratcliffe’s goal with 28 seconds to go in overtime gave the Guelph Storm a 4-3 victory over the Saginaw Spirit in OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Ratcliffe’s goal, his 30th of the season, allowed the Storm to claim the victory in a game they had led 2-0 early in the second period. However, Saginaw battled back to tie it 2-2 by the end of the second. Guelph scored in the second minute of the third period and Saginaw tied it with a tick less than six minutes to go in the period.

Cam Hillis, Dmitri Samorukov and Cedric Ralph scored the other goals for the Storm while Hillis had two assists and Nate Schnarr, Garrett McFadden and Samorukov had one apiece.

Cole Coskey, Camaryn Baber and Nicholas Porco hit for the goals for Saginaw. Hayden Davis assisted on two of the goals while Damien Giroux, Porco and Coskey each had one assist.

The Storm outshot the Spirit 37-34 on the game and 21-10 after the second period. Guelph went 1-for-5 on its power play while Saginaw went 2-for-5 and the Storm also struck for two shorthanded goals.

The Storm also won 46 of the 69 faceoffs in the game with Liam Hawel (14), Hillis (12) and Schnarr (10) hitting double figures on faceoff wins.

Anthony Popovich picked up the win in net for the Storm. He made 31 saves while losing netminder Evan Cormier made 29 saves. Cameron Lamour played just under five minutes midway through the third period for Saginaw and stopped all four shots he faced.

The win keeps the Storm (27-21-1-3) tied with the London Knights (27-20-2-2) tied for fourth in the Western Conference with 58 points apiece. London has a game in hand on the Storm.

The Storm and Knights are a point ahead of the Spirit (25-19-7-0) and Owen Sound Attack (25-19-2-5) who both have a game in hand on Guelph.

The Storm and London are to battle Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
