Redcoats, Highland in close NRU matches

SARNIA – Close games were the norm for local teams in Niagara Rugby Union Men’s A1 Division play Saturday.

The Guelph Redcoats were nipped 27-26 by the Sarnia Saints at Sarnia while Fergus Highland and the Niagara Wasps battled to a 28-28 standoff at Victoria Park in Fergus.

Sarnia leads the division at 6-0-0 and are followed by the Burlington Centaurs at 4-2-0, Niagara at 2-3-1, the Redcoats at 2-4-0, Highland at 1-3-2 and Hamilton Hornets at 1-4-1.

Saturday the Redcoats are to play Niagara at Niagara while Highland is to host Hamilton at 3 p.m.


Men’s A2 Division

Fergus Highland suffered a 24-17 loss to Niagara at Victoria Park.

The result leaves Highland at 4-2-0 and Niagara at 3-3-0.


Women’s A Division

Highland slipped by the Brampton Harlequins 51-46 at Victoria Park.

Highland is third in the standings at 5-3-0 and Brantford second at 6-3-0.

The Fergus squad is to host Hamilton Hornets (1-7-0) Saturday at Victoria Park at noon.


Boys Under-18

The Redcoats defeated Brantford Harlequins Black 15-12 at Brantford Wednesday while Highland was downed 26-5 by Brantford Harlequins Black at Fergus the same day.

The Redcoats are 1-0-1 in their league play this season while Highland is at 0-2-0.

The two local teams are to play Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Exhibition Park.


Boys Under-16

The Redcoats squeezed by the Stratford Blackswans 22-20 at Stratford Saturday for their first win in three league outings this season.

The Guelph side is to host the Sarnia Saints Saturday at 11 a.m. at Exhibition Park.


Girls Under-18

Highland was edged 19-14 by London St. George in league play Wednesday at Victoria Park while the Redcoats had a home game against the Niagara Wasps postponed due to weather.

Wednesday, the Redcoats are to play London St. George at London while Highland is to play the Sarnia Saints at Sarnia.

The Redcoats are 2-0-0 in league play while Highland is 1-2-0.
