Redcoats women drop Niagara to be best in West

GUELPH – The Guelph Redcoats just weren’t going to be denied a first-place finish in the Ontario women’s rugby league’s West Conference Thursday night at Eastview Park.

The Redcoats hosted the Niagara Wasps in a game that completed the OWL Firsts league’s regular season with top spot in the West up for grabs.

The hosts looked like it might be a runaway for them when they scored their first try about two minutes into the game. But then it looked like it might be a close one when Niagara responded right away and evened the score about five minutes into the contest.

Well, first impressions were correct as it was all Guelph after that as the Redcoats ran to a 66-7 win.

The Redcoats finish first in the conference at 8-2-0 while Niagara is second at 6-3-1.

The finishing positions had playoff implications. By finishing first, the Redcoats will host the Aurora Barbarians, second in the East Conference at 7-3-0, in a semifinal match Aug. 11 at Exhibition Park starting at 1 p.m. Toronto Saracens, first in the East at 9-1-0, will host Niagara in the other semifinal Aug. 11.

Medal games, gold and bronze, are to be played Aug. 18.
