Regals slip by Owen Sound to snap winless streak
GUELPH – A five-goal second period and the work of netminder Chris Wood helped the Guelph Regals put an end to their 11-game winless streak in the Ontario junior B lacrosse league Sunday.
The Regals edged the Owen Sound North Stars 9-8 at the Victoria Road arena for their first victory since they defeated the Point Edward Pacers 16-10 at Point Edward May 5. It was also their first win at home since beating the London Blue Devils 15-13 April 22.
While the Regals never trailed in the game, they had to hang on for the victory. The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period before the Regals scored five in a row in the second. Owen Sound completed the second with a goal in the final minute to leave the score at 7-3 for the Regals at the end of the period. The North Stars got the gap down to a single goal with 8:17 to go in regulation time, but they never pulled even.
Wood made 73 saves in the game including 39 in the first period alone. The Regals had 49 shots on net in the entire game.
Guelph went 3-for-10 on its power play while Owen Sound went 5-for-12.
Liam Holwell had three goals and three assists for the Regals while Jayden Bushey and Mitch Zulian added two goals apiece. Carter TenEycke and Caleb Commandant also scored while Zach Sanders, Joel Stevens, Zulian and TenEycke each had two assists and Bushey and Jean-Luc Vereecke had one each.
Spencer Elder, Hayden Coulter and Kurt Long scored twice each for Owen Sound and Brody Caskenette and Luke Grimoldby added single goals. Elder and Caskenette each had four assists while Keegan Mcilmoyle had two and Dan Kitto, Wes Hamilton and Long had one each.
The win kept Guelph’s slim playoff hopes alive. They have two games to go, both at home, and are 10th in the Western Conference at 4-13-1, two points behind the North Stars (5-12-1) and St. Catharines Spartans (5-11-1) who are tied for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Owen Sound also has two games to play while St. Catharines had three. The Regals need to win both of their remaining games — Friday against the Hamilton Bengals (12-5-0) and Sunday against the Windsor Clippers (14-3-0) – and they need both Owen Sound and St. Catharines to lose all their remaining games as the Regals will lose tie-breakers with both. Hamilton and Windsor have both clinched playoff berths.
Friday’s game at the Victoria Road arena is to start at 8 p.m.
