Regals start strong, but fade in loss to Six Nations

HAGERSVILLE – The Guelph Regals surrendered eight second-period goals Friday night in a 16-9 loss to the Six Nations Rebels in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

The teams were tied 4-4 at the end of the first period and the Regals led 6-5 a shade after the five-minute mark of the second before Six Nations went on a scoring spree that saw them run to a 14-7 lead by the four-minute mark of the third. The Rebels led 12-7 at the end of the second.

Reed Kurtz had a hat trick for the Regals while Jayden Bushey and Liam Holwell scored twice apiece. Single goals were netted by Shane Halliwell and Callyn Martin while Curtis Webb and Kurtz each had two assists. Getting one assist each were Halliwell, Tyler Dunk, Cohen Campbell, Zach Sanders, Jack Burke, Holwell and Luke Kivell.

Riley Miller, Mason Hill and Gates Abrams each scored three times for Six Nations while Chayton King and Kahn General each rifled in two goals. Austin Giles, Kobe Whitcomb and Justin Martin also scored while Whitcomb had five assists, Abrams had four, Miller, King and Giles had three each, Daylen Hill, Garret Vyse-Square and Jesse Longboat had two apiece and Mason Hill, winning goaltender Keegan Thomas, Martin and Doug Powless had one each.

Six Nations outshot the Regals 73-46 and went 6-for-7 on its power play while the Regals went 2-for-7.

Curtis Wood was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net.

The setback dropped the Regals to 1-2-0 while the win was the fifth in as many league games for Six Nations.

The Regals are to play the Welland Generals (1-2-0) at the Welland Arena Sunday at 7 p.m.
