Ringette Gryphons to play for Tier 2 medal
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons will play for a Tier 2 medal Sunday on the final day of the Canadian University Challenge Cup ringette tournament at the Gryphon Centre.
The hue of that medal is to be decided by the result of a semifinal match with the Laurier Golden Hawks Sunday at 6:30 a.m. at the Victoria Road arena. Winner goes for gold at 2:45 p.m. while the loser will play for bronze at 1:20 p.m. All of Sunday’s medal games are to be played on the Gryphon Centre’s Gold Rink.
The Gryphs will play against either the Brock Badgers or Nipissing Lakers in their medal match. Those teams are to clash in the other semifinal Sunday at 7 a.m. at Exhibition arena.
Guelph put itself in contention for a medal with a pair of wins over the Trent Excalibur Saturday as the Gryphs finished second-round play with a 7-0 win over Trent in the morning and then won a Tier 2 quarter-final 8-3 over the Excalibur in the evening.
Laurier finished ranked second in Tier 2 while the Gryphs were ranked third. Brock was ranked first and Nipissing fifth and the Lakers surprised fourth-ranked McMaster Marauders Two 7-1 in the other quarter-final.
The Tier 1 medal combatants were decided Saturday.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees and Calgary Dinos are to go for gold at 11:55 a.m. following the bronze-medal match between the Carleton Ravens and Dalhousie Tigers that is slated for 10:30 a.m.
Ottawa defeated city rivals Carleton 5-1 in a semifinal Saturday afternoon while Calgary dropped Dalhousie 7-2 in the other semifinal Saturday night.
Carleton had finished the second round as the top-ranked team in Tier 1 while Calgary was second, Dalhousie third and Ottawa fourth.
Of those four teams, three were in the same pool as the Gryphons in the opening round.
Other games set for Sunday are consolation matches with the Lethbridge Pronghorns playing McMaster One at 10:30 a.m. at Exhibition arena and Western Mustangs battling Alberta at 12 p.m. at Centennial arena in Tier 1 and McMaster Two and Trent meeting in Tier 2 at 11 a.m. on the Gryphon Centre’s Red Rink.
