Rivulettes, Junior Wolves tie at Gryphon Centre

GUELPH – The Cambridge Rivulettes and Whitby Junior Wolves used their special teams to battle to a 2-2 standoff in Provincial Women’s Hockey League play Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre.

The game was held in Guelph as a feature of the Guelph Girls Hockey Association’s Winter Classic Tournament.

Every goal in the game was a special team’s goal as Whitby had a pair of power-play goals and Cambridge scored once on its power play and once while shorthanded.

The Rivulettes scored the only goal of the first period while all the scoring in the game was finished by the 12-minute mark of the second period.

Lauren Martin and Alyssa McLeod scored for the Rivulettes who never trailed in the game. Katherine Birkby and Mia Landry each had one assist.

Claire O’Donoghue and Avery Horlock had a goal apiece for Whitby. Assists were awarded to Kristy Millson, Meaghan Best, Aubrey Cole and Nicole Hegyi.

Cambridge outshot Whitby 25-16 and went 1-for-3 on its power play while Whitby was a perfect 2-for-2 with a manpower advantage.

Kaitlyn Booth was in net for Cambridge and Alexa Gibson picked up the tie for Whitby.

The Rivulettes are tied for sixth in the 20-team league with an 8-6-4-3 record while Whitby is tied for 10th at 6-4-8-1.
