Rocks drop series opener to Huron East Centenaires

SEAFORTH – The Elora Rocks surrendered a goal with just less than six minutes to go as they were edged 6-5 by the Huron East Centenaires in the opening game of their best-of-seven WOAA senior men’s A hockey playoffs Sunday night at the Seaforth Community Centre.

Huron East led 4-2 at the end of the first period and 5-3 after the second.

The Rocks tied it with a pair of goals in the first 11 minutes of the third, but Huron East won on a goal by Phil Aslin with 5:52 to go.

The Rocks scored two shorthanded goals and a power-play marker while Huron East netted a power-play goal.

Spencer Gourlay scored twice for the Rocks while single goals were netted by Chad Herron, Hayden Mancini and Brady Prosic. Andrew Whalen and Herron each had two assists while Kevin Tuckey, Steven Tuckey, Spencer Cudney and Brock West had one apiece.

Huron East received goals from Anthony Soboczynski, Reubin Smith, Josh Gaynor, Brendon Merritt, Collin Hartwick and Phil Aslin. Mitch Smith, Merritt and Gaynor collected two assists apiece.

The teams each took 42 shots in the wide open contest.

Gary Walser was in net for the Rocks while Jesse Raymond was between the pipes for Huron East.

Second game of the series is set for Friday at the Elora and District Community Centre. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
