Rocks edged in overtime to fall behind 2-0 in A semifinal
ELORA – The Huron East Centenaires struck for the winning goal after almost 19 minutes of overtime to edge the Elora Rocks 8-7 in WOAA senior men’s hockey league A semifinal play Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.
The win gives Huron East a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
The game was close throughout as the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period and 5-5 after the second.
Danny Belletti’s goal for the host Rocks with 1:36 to go in regulation time forced the overtime. Huron East’s Brendon Merritt brought the overtime to an end when he scored at 18:48 of the extra period.
Brock West, Brady Prosic, Spencer Gourlay, Chad Herron, Andrew Whalen, Ben Piluk and Belletti each had single goals for Elora. Herron assisted on four of the goals while Whalen had three assists, Spencer Cudney two and Prosic one.
Calvin Penny had a hat trick for Huron East while single goals were netted by Reubin Smith, Mitch Smith, Adam Corbett, Collin Hartwick and Brendon Merritt. Reubin Smith had three assists while Scott Henderson and Josh Gaynor had two apiece.
The Rocks outshot the Centenaires 61-45.
Steve Medland was in net for the Rocks while Alex Hutcheson and Jesse Raymond both saw action in the Huron East net.
Third game of the series is set for Saturday night at the Seaforth Community Centre.
