Rocks, Lucknow to go to limit in play-in series
ELORA – The Elora Rocks will try to avoid having their final game of the Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey league season Tuesday when they are to travel to Lucknow to face the host Lancers in the third and final game of their best-of-three A play-in series.
Lucknow forced the series to its limit by claiming a 3-1 win at the Elora and District Community Centre Sunday in a game that saw all the scoring limited to the third period.
Mason Noble opened the scoring for the Rocks when he fired a shot home from the right wing faceoff circle 10 seconds into the second period. Tyler McPherson drew an assist on the play.
Lucknow evened the score just over seven minutes later on a goal by Rob Ringuette. He added the eventual game-winner on a power play just over six minutes later and Shawn Moore netted an insurance marker with 2:41 to go in the period.
Jamie Miller assisted on two of the Lucknow goals while single assists were awarded to Ean Moffat, Cole Pellett, Moore and Ringuette.
The teams each fired 34 shots on goal and Lucknow went 2-for-6 on its power play while the Rocks were scoreless on five power plays. Gary Walser was tagged with the loss in the Elora net while Ben Nelson picked up the win for the Lancers.
The Rocks had won the opening game of the series 5-4 in double overtime at the Lucknow arena in an evenly-fought contest throughout. Both teams scored once in the first period, twice in the second and once in the third to force overtime. The first extra period was scoreless.
Other details from that game were not reported.
The A playoffs involve the bottom five teams in the 13-team league. Petrolia Squires (7-12-0-0), Tavistock Royals (7-13-0-0) and Shallow Lake Crushers (7-13-0-0) each finished with 14 points while Lucknow (3-16-0-2) had eight and Elora (2-16-0-3) seven. However, Lucknow was awarded a win after the fourth-place Tillsonburg Thunder had to forfeit a game against the Lancers due to the use of an ineligible player. That effectively game Lucknow home-ice advantage in the play-in series and it also knocked Tillsonburg down a spot in the final standings.
Winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to play Petrolia in a best-of-seven A semifinal that is to start on the weekend. Tavistock and Shallow Lake are to meet in the other A semifinal.
Top eight teams in the league are competing in the AA playoffs. They’re the Clinton Radars (20-0-0-0), Ripley Wolves (17-3-0-0), Durham Thundercats (16-4-0-0), Tillsonburg (14-3-0-3), Shelburne Muskies (11-9-0-0), Saugeen Shores Winterhawks (10-9-0-1), Milverton Four Wheel Drives (9-11-0-0) and Huron East Centenaires (7-9-0-3).
Clinton leads its best-of-seven quarter-final with Huron East 2-0, Durham leads Saugeen Shores 2-0, Tillsonburg leads Shelburne 1-0 and Ripley leads Milverton 2-0.
