Rocks nipped by Ripley in marathon shootout

ELORA – Shawn Stewart’s goal in a shootout lifted the Ripley Wolves to an 8-7 victory over the Elora Rocks in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior AA men’s hockey league play Friday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

Stewart was the 22nd shooter in the shootout and only the third to score.

The teams had battled to a 6-6 deadlock after three regulation periods and a five-minute 4-on-4 overtime period.

Elora’s first shooter Marc Sandwell opened the scoring in the shootout before Dan Nicoloff tied it for the Wolves. He was Ripley’s second shooter. All the following shooters until Stewart were either had their shots stopped by the opposing goaltender or they missed the net altogether.

After the third shooter on each team, the shootout rounds became sudden-victory affairs.

The teams had been tied 2-2 at the end of the first period before Elora shot ahead 6-5 by the end of the second. The hosts added to their lead with 5:41 to go in regulation time before Ripley responded with two goals 1:03 apart to force the extra time.

Chad Herron had a pair of goals 18 seconds apart in the second period for the Rocks while Sandwell, Kevin Tuckey, Bradey Prosic, Spencer Gourlay and Mason Noble added single goals. Ben Piluk and Gourlay each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Herron, Nick Horrigan, Prosic, Kevin Collins, Tuckey and Hayden Mancini.

Cody Britton scored twice for Ripley while Tyler Soehner, Jarred Colling, Garret Satosek, Ben Scheel and Dylan Sayle netted a goal apiece. Brian Stanley collected two assists and Ryan Dudgeon, Satosek, Andrew Walsh, Patrick Weijak, Britton, Scheel, Tyson Soers and Tyler McCarthy each had one.

Ripley outshot the Rocks 49-37 prior to the shootout. Kevin Collins took the shootout loss for Elora while Mitch Campbell picked up the shootout win for Ripley.

The Rocks went 2-for-5 on their power play while Ripley was 1-for-4.

Elora is at 2-13-0-3 while Ripley’s at 15-3-0-0.

The Rocks, who have two road games left on their regular-season schedule, are to play the Tavistock Royals (6-13-0-0) at Tavistock Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
